Before you commission a die

The first question worth asking is whether the design genuinely needs a custom section. A surprising proportion of custom extrusion inquiries resolve into a standard profile plus a modest change to the surrounding assembly — a different fastening approach, a slightly altered cover, a revised joint. That route avoids tooling, avoids minimum quantities and avoids the lead time attached to both.

Where a custom section really is required, the second question is volume. Tooling is a fixed cost that has to be spread across the material it produces. A profile with a genuine ongoing production run is a straightforward proposition; a one-off run for a single building rarely is.

What makes a profile drawing usable

A usable drawing shows the full section at a legible scale, dimensions every feature, states the alloy and temper, identifies which dimensions are critical and which are nominal, and notes the finish. It is unambiguous about internal voids, screw ports, gasket races and any surface that has to remain unmarked.

What is not usable: a rendered image, an undimensioned sketch, or a CAD file with no indication of which dimensions matter. Those can start a conversation but cannot start a quote.

How this inquiry is handled

Send the drawing or the sample with the quantity and application context. We review it for obvious extrudability issues, confirm what additional information the manufacturer will need, and coordinate the inquiry from there. Tooling arrangements, minimum quantities, lead times and pricing come from the manufacturer for each specific project.

  2. Alloy and temper requirement, or the performance the profile has to deliver
  3. Annual and initial order quantity, in weight or in length
  4. Tolerance requirements, and which dimensions are critical
  5. Finish requirement and whether it is applied before or after fabrication
  6. Whether the profile has to mate with existing components
  7. Target timing, and whether the project is at concept, prototype or production stage

Supply only or coordinated installation

Custom extrusion is a supply arrangement between the buyer and the manufacturer, coordinated through Gloria Glass. Tooling, minimum quantities, alloy availability, tolerances, lead time and pricing are established by the manufacturer for each inquiry; we do not publish or estimate them here. Gloria Glass does not perform extrusion, die design or fabrication.

Glazing, hardware and finish coordination

  • The profile drawing is reviewed for extrudability before it goes anywhere — wall thickness ratios, unsupported legs and tight internal radii are the usual issues.
  • Critical dimensions are identified explicitly, because a drawing that tolerances everything equally tells the toolmaker nothing.
  • Finish is planned alongside the section, since some geometries are harder to finish evenly than others.
  • Where the profile mates with existing components, physical samples are exchanged rather than dimensions alone.
  • Prototype and production quantities are separated so the buyer knows what each stage commits them to.
