Assessment & Planned Replacement
Glass repair and replacement, planned properly
Broken, chipped, fogged or simply outdated glass gets assessed on site, specified accurately and replaced on a scheduled date. This is planned work for homes and light commercial interiors — not a 24-hour emergency call-out. If an opening is currently unsecured, make it safe with a board-up contractor first and then talk to us about the permanent fix.
The four reasons glass gets replaced
Broken
Impact, thermal stress, structural movement or an inclusion in the glass. Tempered panels fail all at once and are simply gone; annealed and laminated glass tends to crack and stay in place, which changes how urgent the situation is and what temporary handling is appropriate.
Damaged but intact
Edge chips, drilled-hole damage, deep scratches, etched mineral staining and surface abrasion. The question here is genuinely repair-versus-replace, and the answer turns on where the damage sits and what type of glass it is in.
Failed
Insulated units with blown perimeter seals, delamination in laminated glass, degraded gaskets and sealant, sagging or binding doors. The glass may look serviceable while no longer doing the job it was specified to do.
Outdated
Framed enclosures, patterned glass from a previous decade, mirrored walls or heavy framed partitions that no longer suit the space. Nothing is broken; the specification has simply been outgrown, and replacement is a design decision rather than a repair.
Where we work
Residential and light-commercial interiors: shower enclosures and tub screens, interior partitions and office fronts, glass doors and their hardware, railing infill panels, mirrors, tabletops and shelving, cabinet and display glass, and fixed interior lites. Storefront frontages are covered separately on our storefront glass page.
We do not take on structural glazing repairs, curtain wall remediation, or work requiring trades outside glazing — and we will tell you when what you are describing needs a different specialist rather than stretching to cover it.
Repair or replace: how the decision is actually made
Repair is realistic when the glass itself is sound and the problem is in the surrounding parts: worn hinges, a dragging closer, failed sweeps and seals, loose clamps, degraded sealant, a misaligned track. These are the cheapest and least disruptive fixes and they are frequently what a "cracked shower door" call turns out to need.
Replacement becomes the answer when the glass is compromised. Any crack in tempered glass means the panel is already at the end of its life. Edge chips and damage around holes sit in the highest-stress zones of a panel. A failed insulated unit cannot be resealed to its original performance. Delaminating laminated glass has lost the interlayer bond that gave it its retention behaviour. And glass that was never safety glazing in a location that now calls for it should be upgraded rather than patched.
There is also a middle case worth naming: glass that is technically serviceable but visually finished. Deep mineral etching cannot be cleaned off, and heavily scratched glass in a prominent position rarely satisfies anyone after a polish attempt. We would rather tell you that up front than take payment for a marginal improvement.
Safety while you wait
Keep people and pets away from cracked glass, especially at ground level and in doors. Do not use a cracked shower door, a damaged railing panel or a compromised entrance leaf — a partially broken panel can fail completely without further impact. Do not tape a cracked tempered panel and treat it as stable; tape holds fragments, it does not restore strength. Photograph the damage for your records and, if it is an insurance matter, before anything is cleared.
Securing an open building envelope is a specialist job with its own equipment and availability, and it sits outside our scope. Arranging that first, then bringing us in for the permanent glazing, gets you a better result than waiting for one contractor to do both.
How the work runs
- 1. Description and photographs. Often enough to identify the system, rule options in or out, and tell you whether a site visit is even needed.
- 2. On-site assessment and measurement. Glass type and thickness, frame and hardware condition, opening dimensions, and the cause where it can be established — because a panel that broke from thermal stress or movement will do it again if only the glass is changed.
- 3. Written scope. What is being replaced, what makeup, what stays, and what we recommend against.
- 4. Fabrication. Off site, to the verified dimensions, with lead time driven by the glass type.
- 5. Installation and removal. Old glass removed and disposed of, new panel set, hardware adjusted, seals and sealant renewed as needed.
What we need for an accurate estimate
- What the glass is part of: shower, door, partition, railing, mirror, window
- Approximate width, height and thickness
- Clear photographs of the damage, the edge and the surrounding frame or hardware
- Whether the panel is broken, cracked, fogged, scratched or simply dated
- What happened, if you know — impact, movement, age or no obvious cause
- Residential or commercial, and which floor
- Whether the opening is currently secure
- Whether an insurance claim is involved
Frequently Asked Questions
Repair and replacement questions
- Is this a 24/7 emergency glass service?
- No. Gloria Glass provides scheduled assessment, fabrication and replacement. We do not operate a 24-hour emergency call-out and do not advertise a guaranteed response time. If glass is broken right now and an opening is unsecured, contact a board-up or security service first to make the area safe, then reach us to plan the permanent replacement.
- Can chipped or scratched glass be repaired instead of replaced?
- Sometimes small surface scratches in annealed glass can be polished, but polishing removes material and can leave visible distortion, and it is not appropriate on tempered or coated glass. Chips at an edge or a hole are a different matter: they concentrate stress in exactly the place a panel is weakest. We assess the specific damage rather than applying a rule, and we will say when replacement is the honest answer.
- My insulated unit is foggy. Can the seal be fixed?
- The visible fog is condensation between the panes, which means the perimeter seal has failed and the unit is no longer performing as designed. Drilling and venting techniques exist, but they do not restore the sealed cavity or the original thermal performance and can leave residue. In most cases replacing the insulated unit is the durable answer. The frame usually stays.
- Do you replace a single panel in a run of matching glass?
- Yes, where the makeup and dimensions can be matched. Be aware that a new lite next to older glass can read differently: tint and coatings vary between production runs and glass weathers in place. On a highly visible run we will tell you when replacing a wider section produces a better result than a single-panel swap.
- What temporary work will you do?
- Our scope is the permanent glazing. We do not provide board-up, security screening or emergency stabilization as a service. Where a partly damaged panel is still in place and we are on site, we will advise on whether it should stay in service until the replacement arrives, and we may remove glass that is clearly unsafe to leave. Anything beyond that belongs to a specialist board-up or restoration contractor.
- How long does a replacement take?
- Assessment and measurement can usually be arranged quickly. The controlling variable is fabrication: tempered, laminated, insulated, oversized, coated and custom-shaped glass each have their own lead time, and tempering in particular cannot be rushed. We give you a project-specific expectation once the makeup is confirmed rather than quoting a standard turnaround.
