Frameless and semi-frameless shower enclosures

A frameless enclosure lets a bathroom read as one room instead of two, and it puts the tile work you paid for on full display. Gloria Glass measures the finished opening, prepares the layout, fabricates the tempered panels and installs the enclosure — working with your builder or tile setter so the substrate, curb and drainage are ready before glass is cut.

Frameless, semi-frameless and framed

The three categories describe how much metal surrounds the glass, and each carries consequences beyond appearance.

Frameless

Thick tempered panels held by clamps, hinges and minimal channel. The glass carries the load, so hinge backing, panel size and opening tolerance all become critical. Visually it disappears; practically it demands the most accurate measurement and the most attention to what sits behind the tile.

Semi-frameless

Fixed panels held in slim channel with a frameless door, or a header across the top. Framing absorbs some out-of-square in the opening and lets the glass be thinner. A sensible middle route where walls are uneven or budget is a real constraint.

Framed

Full perimeter framing with thinner glass. More forgiving, more visible, and easier to adjust. Still a rational answer in rental units, secondary bathrooms and openings with significant deviation.

Common configurations

  • Single fixed panel (walk-in screen). One panel, no door, water controlled by shower position and floor slope. The simplest enclosure and the least to go wrong, provided the layout supports it.
  • Door plus inline panel. The most common arrangement in a standard alcove-plus-opening bathroom. Door width, swing direction and the position of the hinge wall drive the layout.
  • Ninety-degree return. Two glass walls meeting at a corner, with the door in one of them. Requires the corner to be genuinely square or for the layout to accommodate that it is not.
  • Neo-angle and corner entries. Angled panels into a corner. Efficient in tight plans, more sensitive to measurement, and more dependent on hardware selection.
  • Tub screens. Fixed or pivoting panels over a bath. Deck condition, tub rim shape and hinge backing decide what is achievable.
  • Sliding and bypass enclosures. Where a swing door would foul a vanity or WC, a sliding panel on a track solves the clearance problem at the cost of a permanently overlapping panel.

Glass and hardware selection

Shower glass is tempered safety glazing. Beyond that, the choices are clear glass, low-iron glass with less green cast at the edges, and obscured or textured glass where privacy matters more than sightlines. Optional hydrophobic coatings reduce mineral spotting. Edgework is polished on exposed edges as standard.

Hardware does more work than people expect. Hinge type determines whether a door swings in, out or both, and how it self-centres. Clamps, channel, headers and support bars stabilise fixed panels. Handles, knobs, towel bars and sweeps finish the assembly. Finishes are chosen with your plumbing fixtures in mind, and it is worth confirming the plumbing finish before the glass hardware is ordered — matching after the fact rarely goes well. Tempered glass cannot be modified after fabrication, so every hinge cut-out and hole is set at drawing stage.

Substrate, curb and drainage readiness

The enclosure is only as good as what it lands on. Before we measure, the tile, stone or wall panel finish should be complete and cured, the curb or threshold set at its final height and slope, the shower floor sloped to drain, and the waterproofing signed off by whoever installed it. Hinge and clamp locations need solid backing behind the finish.

Curbless and low-threshold showers depend entirely on the floor assembly: recessed framing or slab depression, drain type and position, and slope achieved within the available build-up. We do not decide whether curbless is achievable in your bathroom — your builder, designer and plumber do — and we will not promise it from photographs. Once the assembly is confirmed, the glass detailing follows it.

How the work runs

  1. 1. Layout conversation. Configuration, door swing, hardware finish and any coating, discussed against the bathroom plan.
  2. 2. Pre-tile coordination (ideal). Where we are involved early, we flag blocking positions and curb detailing before walls close.
  3. 3. Final field measurement. After finishes are complete: openings, plumb, level, out-of-square and hardware positions recorded.
  4. 4. Shop drawing and approval. Panel sizes, cut-outs and hardware set out for your sign-off. This is the last point at which changes are free.
  5. 5. Fabrication. Cutting, edgework, cut-outs and tempering — off site, with lead time driven by the fabricator.
  6. 6. Installation and adjustment. Panels set, hardware fitted, door adjusted, seals and sweeps fitted, sealant applied where required.
  7. 7. Handover. Care instructions, plus how long to wait before the shower is used if sealant needs to cure.

Keeping it clear

Almost everything that ruins the look of shower glass is mineral deposit from water left to dry on the surface. A squeegee after each use does more than any product. Use non-abrasive glass cleaner, avoid abrasive pads and ammonia-heavy products near coated glass and sealant, keep the bathroom ventilated, and check sweeps and seals occasionally since they are consumable parts. Frequently Asked Questions

Shower enclosure questions we answer most often

When is the shower measured?
Final measurement happens after the tile, stone or panel finish is complete and the curb, bench and threshold are set. Frameless glass is cut to the opening that exists, and finished surfaces move dimensions by enough to matter. Measuring from framing or from a drawing before finishes are in place risks glass that cannot be installed, and tempered glass cannot be trimmed after fabrication.
Can my bathroom take a curbless shower?
That is a construction question rather than a glass question, and it depends on the floor structure, the drain position, the slope achievable within the available depth, and the waterproofing approach. We cannot promise curbless feasibility from photos. Your builder, designer or plumber determines whether the assembly can be built; once it can, we detail the glass around it.
Do frameless enclosures leak?
A frameless enclosure manages water rather than sealing against it: glass, gaps, seals and sweeps direct water back into the shower, and the slope of the floor and the position of the shower head do much of the work. A well-planned enclosure keeps water inside under normal use. An enclosure with a door that opens over the drain path, a floor sloped away from it, or a body spray aimed at a joint will pass water regardless of how the glass is made.
How thick is frameless shower glass?
Frameless enclosures normally use thicker tempered glass than framed units because the glass itself carries the hardware and the door loads. Semi-frameless and framed configurations can use thinner glass because the frame carries the load. Which thickness suits your opening depends on panel size, door width, hinge type and the substrate behind the tile, and it is confirmed for the specific enclosure.
What has to be behind the tile where hinges land?
Hinges and clamps transfer real load into the wall, so they need solid backing — blocking, a stud in the right position, or another suitable substrate. Tile over a lightweight backer with nothing behind it is not adequate. Blocking is far easier to add during framing than after tiling, which is why we prefer to discuss hinge positions before the walls close up.
Is a protective coating worth it?
A factory-applied hydrophobic coating makes glass easier to keep clear by reducing how strongly water and minerals grip the surface. It reduces cleaning effort; it does not eliminate cleaning, and it is not permanent. It is most worthwhile where water is hard, and least worthwhile where the enclosure will be squeegeed after every use anyway.
