Well-installed frameless glass is straightforward to maintain. Most of the difference between glass that still looks new and glass that does not comes from a short routine and from avoiding a few specific products.
The routine
Regular cleaning with a non-abrasive glass cleaner and a soft cloth or squeegee keeps panels clear. In showers, the single most effective habit is drying the glass after use: hard water damage is caused by mineral deposits left behind as water evaporates, so removing the water removes the mechanism. What to avoid
Abrasive pads, scouring powders and blade scrapers create fine scratches that cannot be polished out of tempered glass. Strong acidic or alkaline cleaners can attack seals, gaskets and hardware finishes even when the glass itself is unaffected. Ammonia-based cleaners should be kept away from coated glass and from the perimeter of insulated units. When a product's suitability is unclear, test it somewhere inconspicuous first.
Hardware, seals and tracks
Hinges, clamps and patch fittings work loose over time under normal use. Checking them periodically and tightening to the hardware manufacturer's specification — not beyond it — prevents misalignment that would otherwise be corrected the hard way. Sliding tracks should be kept clear of grit, which is what wears rollers. Wipe seals and sweeps rather than lubricating them unless the manufacturer calls for it.
What to watch for
Three symptoms are worth acting on rather than monitoring: a door that has started to drop or drag, a persistent haze or condensation between two panes of an insulated unit, and any chip or nick at a glass edge. The first is an alignment or hardware issue that gets worse; the second usually indicates a failed seal, covered in our insulated glass unit guide; the third matters because edge damage is where tempered glass is most vulnerable.
