What is actually happening when glass clouds over
Water carries dissolved minerals, and when droplets sit on glass and evaporate, the minerals stay behind on the surface. A single shower leaves a faint film; repeated cycles without a wipe-down build up layer over layer until the surface looks permanently hazy. In harder water, this happens faster and the deposits are denser. Left long enough, the mineral film can etch into the surface of the glass itself rather than sitting on top of it, which is the point at which cleaning stops being able to fully reverse the damage.
Soap and body-wash residue compound the problem because they bind with mineral deposits and dry into a film that is harder to lift than minerals alone, which is why a shower used daily with no wipe-down routine clouds noticeably faster than one that gets dried after each use.
The daily habit that prevents most of it
A squeegee pass across the glass immediately after the last shower of the day, followed by a dry microfiber wipe on the hardware and channel, removes the vast majority of the water before it has a chance to evaporate and leave minerals behind. This single habit, done consistently, does more to keep glass clear than any cleaner or coating applied afterward. Keeping the squeegee within reach of the shower, rather than stored elsewhere in the bathroom, is what actually makes the habit stick.
Running the bathroom fan or cracking a window after showering also helps, since it speeds evaporation and reduces the standing humidity that keeps every surface in the room damp longer than necessary.

Acidic cleaners, including diluted vinegar, are effective on mineral deposits but should be rinsed off promptly and kept away from metal hardware and any decorative coating on hinges or handles, since prolonged acid contact can dull or discolor finishes. Abrasive pads and scrapers can leave fine scratches in glass that then trap dirt and make future cleaning harder, so they are worth avoiding even when a deposit feels stubborn.
Protective coatings: what they realistically do
Protective glass coatings work by making the surface less receptive to mineral and soap buildup, so water sheets off more easily and deposits are looser and easier to wipe away. They reduce how often and how hard the glass needs cleaning; they do not make a shower maintenance-free, and they wear down with use and with the cleaning products used afterward. A coating applied to already-etched glass will not reverse the etching — it can only slow further buildup on the surface that remains. Reapplication on a regular schedule, following the specific product's guidance, is part of getting ongoing value from a coating rather than a one-time fix.
Hardware and seals need their own care
Hinges, handles, channels and door seals collect the same mineral and soap residue as the glass, and a buildup around a hinge or channel can affect how smoothly a door swings or slides. A dry wipe-down of hardware after the glass squeegee takes very little extra time and prevents residue from working into moving parts. Door seals and sweeps should be checked periodically for stiffness, cracking or gaps, since a failing seal changes water containment even when the glass itself is in good condition.
When the damage is permanent
Mineral film that sits on the surface can usually be lifted with the right cleaner and some patience. Etching — where minerals have reacted with the glass surface over time — leaves a texture change that cleaning cannot fully polish out, because the damage is in the glass itself rather than on top of it. At that point, professional glass polishing can sometimes improve the appearance, but severe etching is a case where replacement is the more realistic path. Preventing that outcome is almost entirely a matter of the daily squeegee habit and not letting deposits accumulate over months or years.
