Custom mirrors for bathrooms, walls, gyms and studios
A mirror cut to the wall it lives on looks entirely different from a mirror bought to fit approximately. Gloria Glass measures the space, sets out the cut-outs and edge treatment, fabricates the panels and installs them with mounting appropriate to the substrate and the weight.
Where custom mirrors earn it
Bathrooms and vanities
A mirror sized to the vanity, the backsplash and the sconces changes how finished a bathroom looks. Single wide panels over double vanities, panels stopped precisely at a tile line, and mirrors cut around sconces or a wall-mounted faucet all require exact layout — which is why they are fabricated to a field measurement rather than bought from a stock size.
Feature and dining walls
A full or partial mirrored wall borrows daylight and depth from the room opposite it, which is why it works so well in narrow hallways, small dining rooms and windowless spaces. What the mirror reflects matters more than the mirror: a wall opposite a window or an attractive view is worth mirroring, a wall opposite clutter is not.
Gyms, studios and dance rooms
Continuous runs of mirror across a training wall, set out so the panel joints land in sensible positions and the sightline is uninterrupted at the heights people actually use. Mounting height, floor protection at the bottom edge and impact exposure are the planning questions here, along with wall flatness.
Decorative and antiqued mirror
Bevelled panels, shaped mirrors, mirrored cabinet and joinery inserts, and antiqued or tinted mirror used as a wall finish rather than a functional reflector. These read as surface treatment and are usually specified alongside other custom glass fabrication.
Cut-outs and shaping
Most custom mirror work is defined by what has to be avoided rather than by the outline. Sconce and outlet penetrations, notches around a backsplash return or a window reveal, radius corners, an arched top, holes for standoff hardware, and cut-outs for a wall-mounted television or medicine cabinet are all fabricated before the mirror leaves the shop.
Each of those has a tolerance implication. A cut-out drawn from a plan will not line up with a box installed a half inch off. We field measure obstruction positions from fixed references and mark them on the shop drawing, which is the document worth reviewing carefully — after fabrication, a mirror cannot be modified.
Edgework and finish options
- Polished edge. Smooth and clear; the default for frameless mirrors and the least visually intrusive.
- Bevelled edge. An angled perimeter band that catches light and adds definition; a more decorative, more traditional look.
- Seamed edge. A safety treatment for edges that will be concealed behind a frame, channel or trim.
- Framed. Mirror set into trim or joinery, where the frame does the visual work and the edge treatment is hidden.
- Thickness and backing. Chosen for panel size, handling and the environment — with moisture-appropriate backing where wet areas are involved.
Mounting and substrate planning
Mirrors are heavier than they look, and the mounting method has to suit both the weight and what the wall is made of. Drywall with studs, drywall without backing, plaster, masonry, tile over backer board and timber panelling all behave differently. Where possible we identify the substrate during measurement and specify a mounting approach accordingly: clips and channel, standoffs, concealed cleats, or adhesive used in combination with mechanical support rather than on its own.
Two other planning items save trouble later. First, wall flatness — large mirrors on uneven walls show distortion that mounting cannot fix, so it is better to know before fabrication. Second, service coordination — outlets, sconces, cabinets and vanity fixtures should be in final position before the mirror is measured, because their positions define the cut-outs.
How the work runs
Layout conversation, then field measurement of the wall and every obstruction, then a shop drawing showing panel sizes, joints, cut-outs and edge treatment for your approval. Fabrication follows: cutting, edgework, cut-outs and any decorative treatment. On site, we remove the existing mirror where required, prepare and check the substrate, install with the agreed mounting, and clean the panels down before we leave. Care is straightforward — non-abrasive cleaner on a cloth rather than sprayed directly at the edges, since liquid pooling at the perimeter is what damages mirror backing over time.

Frequently Asked Questions
Mirror questions we answer most often
- Can a mirror be cut around outlets, sconces and a faucet?
- Yes. Holes, notches and cut-outs are made during fabrication, and they are set from a field-measured layout that records the exact position of each obstruction relative to fixed reference points. Once the mirror is fabricated, nothing can be modified, so cut-out positions are the part of the drawing worth checking twice. Electrical boxes should be in final position before we measure.
- What edge should I choose?
- A polished edge is smooth, clean and the usual choice for a frameless mirror. A bevelled edge cuts an angled band around the perimeter that catches light and reads more traditional or more decorative. A seamed edge is a safety treatment only and is meant to be hidden behind a frame or trim. The choice is aesthetic, with one practical note: bevels reduce the reflective area slightly at the perimeter.
- How are large mirrors mounted?
- Depending on size, weight, substrate and whether the wall is wet: J-channel and top clips, standoff hardware, concealed cleat systems, or adhesive combined with mechanical support. Weight and substrate govern the method. Large mirrors are heavy enough that drywall anchors alone are not appropriate — solid backing, studs or a suitable fixing system carry the load.
- Is bathroom mirror glass different?
- Mirrors intended for wet areas use backing and edge treatments that resist moisture ingress at the perimeter, which is where mirrors typically deteriorate first — the black edge creep seen on old bathroom mirrors. Ventilation and keeping standing water off the bottom edge matter as much as the product specification.
- Can you mirror a whole gym or studio wall?
- Yes, using multiple panels sized for safe handling and access, with joints set out deliberately so the layout looks intentional rather than accidental. Wall flatness is the limiting factor: a wall that undulates produces visible distortion across large mirrors, and no mounting method corrects that. We assess flatness during measurement and tell you what to expect.
- Do you remove and dispose of an old mirror?
- Usually. Removal difficulty depends on how it was fixed. Mirrors adhered directly to drywall often damage the wall surface as they come off, and repair and repainting are typically the client's or a decorator's responsibility. We flag that likelihood before we start rather than after.
