Back-painted glass wall panels and splashbacks
A hard, seamless, wipeable surface with the color sitting behind the glass rather than on it. Gloria Glass specifies the substrate glass, the color and the joint layout, takes field dimensions and cutout positions before fabrication, and arranges professional installation as part of the project scope.
Where it is specified
- Kitchen and bar splashbacks. A single panel behind a run of counter, with no grout lines to clean and no porous joints. The dominant constraints are outlet cutouts and the appliance layout.
- Bathroom and shower surrounds. Wall cladding in wet areas, often coordinated with frameless shower enclosures so glass thickness, hardware finish and joint lines agree.
- Meeting room writing walls. Full-height dry-erase surfaces, usually alongside office glass partitions, where the same color is used to make one wall of a glazed room solid.
- Lobby, elevator and column cladding. Panels used as a durable finish in high-traffic circulation zones, where painted drywall marks within months.
- Feature and accent walls. Reflective color as an interior element, frequently paired with custom mirrors on adjacent surfaces.

Why the substrate wall matters
Glass is flat and it is reflective, which is an unforgiving combination. A wall that looks acceptable under paint will show every bow and every proud joint once a glossy panel is set against it — either as a visible ripple in the reflection or as an uneven adhesive line. On adhesive-fixed work the wall also has to be sound, dry, clean and compatible with the adhesive system, which rules out some coatings and some freshly finished surfaces until they have cured.
Practically, this means the wall is assessed before the panel is ordered, not when it arrives. Where flatness cannot be guaranteed, dividing a large area into more panels is usually a better answer than a single heroic sheet.
Cutouts and services
Everything is fabricated before the panel is finished. Outlets, switches, faucet penetrations, television brackets, pen trays and any hole for a fixing are cut at the factory. Once the glass is toughened and painted, no further cutting, drilling or trimming is possible — a panel with a mispositioned outlet is a remake, not a repair.
The practical consequence is a fixed sequence: electrical and plumbing rough-in is completed and final, the positions are field verified against the actual installed boxes, the panel drawing is approved, and only then is fabrication released. Common questions
- What is back-painted glass?
- A glass panel with an opaque coating applied to its rear face and cured, so the color is seen through the glass rather than on top of it. The visible surface stays glass: hard, non-porous, wipeable and seamless across the panel. It is used for splashbacks, feature walls, elevator lobby cladding, writable surfaces and column wraps.
- Can you match a specific paint color?
- In most cases a target color can be matched from a standard paint reference or a supplied sample, but the result is always read through the glass, which shifts it. Standard clear float carries a green cast that pushes pale colors — whites, greys, pale blues — noticeably cooler and greener. That is why low-iron glass is normally specified for light colors. Approve a physical sample in the actual room light rather than a paint chip.
- Is it suitable behind a cooktop?
- Behind a cooktop the glass must be toughened, and the specific clearances and any requirements around the heat source are set by the appliance manufacturer's installation instructions and the project's design team. Tell us the appliance and the layout at quotation stage so the panel is specified accordingly.
- Can it be used as a markerboard?
- Yes — a back-painted panel makes a durable dry-erase surface with no ghosting seam, which is why it is common in meeting rooms. It is specified the same way as any other panel; the only differences are the mounting height, allowance for a pen tray if wanted, and confirming that the surrounding wall is flat enough for a large single sheet.
- How are cutouts handled?
- All cutouts, notches and holes for outlets, switches, fixings and services must be fabricated before the panel is toughened and painted. Nothing can be cut, drilled or trimmed on site. This means outlet positions have to be final and field verified before the order is released, and it is the most common source of delay on these projects.
- How do panels meet each other?
- Large areas are broken into panels, and the joint is a design decision: a tight silicone joint reads as a hairline, an open shadow gap reads as a deliberate line, and a metal trim reads as a frame. Panel size is limited by the glass sheet, by what can be carried through the building, and by how flat the substrate is — so joint layout is usually set by access as much as by aesthetics.
