Frameless shower door swing, clearance and layout, worked through properly
A frameless shower door is easy to spec and easy to get slightly wrong in ways that only show up once it is installed and someone has to actually use the bathroom. Swing direction, clearance to the vanity or toilet, hinge side and panel widths are geometry questions that belong on the layout drawing before glass is ordered, because tempered panels cannot be trimmed or re-cut once fabricated. This guide walks through the layout decisions in the order they usually need to be made.

In-swing vs out-swing: start here
An out-swing door opens into the bathroom, which usually reads as more elegant because the door does not sit inside the wet zone, but it needs open floor space in front of the enclosure that does not overlap a vanity, toilet, or the swing of another door. An in-swing door opens into the shower itself, which works well when the bathroom floor is tight, but it needs enough room inside the shower for a person to stand clear of the door arc, and it puts the door within the wet area, which affects hardware choices over time.
Many enclosures are specified to swing both ways on a pivot hinge, which is worth asking about if floor space is limited in both directions. Not every configuration supports it, and it should be decided at layout stage rather than assumed.
Mapping clearance to the fixtures around it
The most common layout mistake is drawing the shower in isolation and only checking clearances against the room once the door has already been ordered. Walk the swing arc against every fixture nearby:
- Vanity or countertop edge — does the door clear it fully open, not just at rest?
- Toilet — is there room to sit and stand with the door open at the same time?
- Towel bars, robe hooks and radiators — do they intrude on the swing radius?
- Another door in the room — do the two swings overlap when both are open?
- Adjacent walls or knee walls — does the door clear a return wall or half-wall?
Building codes and accessibility guidelines set minimum clear floor space in front of fixtures in many jurisdictions; treat those figures as a floor to confirm against the applicable code, not as the target to design toward.
Choosing hinge side
Hinge side is usually decided by whichever choice leaves the most usable floor space when the door is open, and by which side keeps the door handle reachable from outside the enclosure without reaching across the opening. In a corner enclosure, hinging on the wall farthest from other fixtures generally gives the cleanest swing. In a niche or alcove enclosure, hinge side often follows which side has a fixed panel long enough to anchor the hinge properly, since a hinge needs a substantial glass edge or wall to mount to, not a narrow return panel.
Door and panel widths, and where notches come in
Door width is a balance between an opening wide enough to step through comfortably and a panel light enough for the hinge hardware rated for it — wider doors generally need thicker glass or additional hinge support. Fixed panels either fill the remaining opening at full height or step down around an obstruction. A notch — a cut corner in a panel to clear a valve, a ledge, or a curb return — is a legitimate way to make an awkward layout work, but it has to be identified at template stage, because it is cut and finished before the glass is tempered and cannot be added afterward.
Where a layout genuinely cannot find a clean single-panel solution, splitting the opening into a door plus one or two fixed panels, each sized to the obstructions around it, is usually more workable than trying to force one oversized piece of glass to do everything.
Header, bracing and how much support the layout needs
Taller openings, wider doors and enclosures with only one wall to anchor to often need a header bar or bracing to keep the assembly rigid, particularly on the hinge side. A header changes the visual line of the enclosure and needs ceiling or wall blocking to fix to, so its use should be settled during layout rather than treated as a fallback decided at installation. Curb, threshold and floor geometry
Door swing has to clear whatever sits at the floor, whether that is a raised curb, a curbless linear drain transition, or a threshold strip. A curbless design generally makes the swing zone feel larger because there is no step to work around, but it puts more responsibility on floor slope and waterproofing to keep water contained without a curb. Where a curb is used, its height and depth need to be fixed before the door bottom seal is selected, since seals are matched to a specific curb and floor gap.
Common layout mistakes worth checking for
- Checking the swing only at the resting position, not fully open.
- Sizing the opening without accounting for hinge hardware width.
- Deciding hinge side after the vanity or toilet is already installed.
- Assuming a notch or cutout can be added after the glass is ordered.
- Skipping the header conversation until the door already feels unstable.
