Why the tilt position matters more than it sounds

The tilt position looks like a minor convenience and behaves like a significant one. A sash tilted at the head admits air along a narrow slot at the top of the opening, which ventilates without a draught at occupant level, keeps rain largely out, and is difficult to open from outside. That combination is why the position gets used daily in buildings that have it — it is the setting people actually live with, rather than the full opening they use twice a year.

The turn position and cleaning access

Swinging the sash fully inward means the exterior face of the glass comes indoors. On a third-floor window, that turns a scheduled exterior cleaning visit into a five-minute domestic task. For buildings where exterior access is genuinely awkward, this alone can justify the operation.

The trade is interior space. An inward-opening sash needs clear space in front of it, which affects where a desk, a bed, a blind or a curtain track can go. It is a planning question rather than a problem, but it must be planned.

Insulated framing and interior conditions

Insulated framing is the usual starting point for conditioned residential space, where interior comfort and condensation behaviour are year-round concerns.
