How the mechanism changes the experience
Turning the handle on a lift-and-slide raises the panel onto its rollers. Because the panel is no longer bearing on its seals, a very heavy leaf glides with modest effort. Turning the handle back drops the panel down onto the seals and pulls it into the frame, which is what gives the closed position its weather and acoustic behaviour. An ordinary sliding door has to compromise between easy movement and firm sealing; lift-and-slide separates the two states so neither has to be compromised.
The practical consequence is that a lift-and-slide is a deliberate action rather than a casual nudge. For a door that is opened in the morning and closed at night, that is exactly right. For a door that is opened dozens of times an hour, a hinged or a lighter sliding configuration may suit the use better.
Configuration and where the panels go
Configurations are described by how many panels there are and which of them move. A two-panel arrangement with one fixed and one sliding is the simplest. Three- and four-panel arrangements give a wider clear opening but need more track and more stacking space. Pocketing, where the panels slide fully into a wall cavity, gives the cleanest open condition and imposes the greatest demand on the surrounding construction.
Deciding this early matters because the stacking arrangement determines the wall layout, the furniture plan and often the position of adjacent structure. It is an architectural decision with a hardware consequence, not the other way round.
