What 'minimal' actually costs the design
Narrow sightlines are achieved by moving material out of the visible frame, which means the remaining structure works harder and the tolerances tighten. A minimal system is therefore less forgiving of an out-of-level substrate, a deflecting head or a wall that is out of plumb than a conventional sliding door would be. The system is not fragile; it is precise, and precision has to be supplied by the surrounding construction as well as by the frame.
This is the single most useful thing to understand before committing. A project that budgets for a minimal system but not for the structural head, the level substrate and the drainage detail is budgeting for half of the outcome.
Stacking, pocketing and corners
Panels have to go somewhere when the opening is open. Stacking against an adjacent wall is the simplest arrangement and costs nothing structurally, but the stacked panels remain visible and occupy wall length. Pocketing hides them entirely inside a cavity, which is the cleanest result and the most demanding one: the cavity has to be built, kept dry, kept accessible for future service, and coordinated with everything else in that wall.
Corner openings, where two runs meet and the corner post either moves away or disappears entirely, are the most demanding condition of all. They need the head structure resolved with the engineer well before the system is ordered.

Supply only or coordinated installation
Minimal sliding systems are normally supplied with installation coordinated as part of the project scope, because setting a narrow-sightline run true is where the finished result is won or lost. Supply-only arrangements are possible with an experienced glazing contractor, and in that case the interfaces — structural head, sill drainage, substrate tolerance — are documented before delivery.
Glazing, hardware and finish coordination
- Panel weight follows glass area and makeup, and panel weight drives track, hardware and structural decisions, so glazing is chosen early rather than last.
- Head deflection is a real constraint on wide openings: the structure above the track has to be stiff enough that the panels keep operating after the building settles and loads change.
- Sill drainage is designed rather than added, particularly where a flush threshold is wanted.
- Finish is coordinated with adjacent windows and doors so the elevation reads as one system.
- Handles, locking points and any flush-pull detail are confirmed with the panel layout.

- How wide can a minimal sliding opening be?
- The governing limits are panel size, panel weight, the structure above the opening and the access available to deliver and glaze the panels. Those are assessed per project; we do not publish maximum dimensions until the manufacturer data review is complete.
- Can a minimal sliding system be retrofitted into an existing opening?
- Sometimes. It depends on what carries the head, how level the substrate is along the run, and how the sill can be drained. A site review answers it far more reliably than a drawing does.
