Glass canopies, walkway covers and entrance wind screens
An entrance canopy is the one piece of glass on a building that is both overhead and permanently exposed to weather. It has to be specified as a safety assembly first and a design feature second. Where these assemblies are used
Entrance canopies
A projecting glass roof over a main door: shelter at the threshold without closing off daylight or hiding the facade behind an opaque awning. Typical projections are modest — far enough to cover someone stopping to open a door, short enough that the cantilever stays reasonable for the wall behind it. Because it sits directly over the busiest point of a building, its glass make-up and its drainage are the two decisions that matter.
Walkway and link covers
A run of glass carried on repeating brackets or rods, covering a path between two buildings or along a frontage. These are set out as a repeated bay rather than a one-off: the bay module fixes the panel size, the panel size fixes the thickness, and the joint treatment between panels decides whether the run reads as a continuous plane or a series of separate pieces.
Terrace and patio wind screens
Vertical glass used to make an exposed seating area, terrace corner or balcony usable in wind, while keeping the view. The detailing overlaps closely with glass railings and guards: base shoe, spigots, posts or standoffs, all resolved against what the deck or slab can actually carry. Where the screen also acts as a fall protection barrier, it becomes a guard and is designed as one.
Recessed and door-side screens
Short returns of glass beside an entrance that cut the draught through the doorway without adding a vestibule. These usually coordinate with the frontage rather than standing alone, so they are specified alongside storefront glass and aluminum entrances.
Support concepts compared
The support type is chosen for the projection, the wall behind it and how much hardware you want to see. It is worth deciding this before anything else, because it determines the fixing loads the structure has to accept.

Glass make-up
Overhead glass is laminated. That is the starting point and, in practice, the end point too: an interlayer keeps the lite together if it breaks, which is the behaviour you want above a doorway. Whether the plies are also heat-treated, how thick they are, and which interlayer is used depend on the span between supports, the exposure and the loads the project's engineer assigns. - Interlayer. Standard PVB and stiffer ionoplast interlayers behave differently after breakage. Stiffer interlayers hold a broken panel flatter for longer, which is why they are common on canopies and guards.
- Low-iron glass. Removes the green cast at the edges. On a canopy you look at the glass edge-on from below, so this is more visible here than anywhere else on a building.
- Frit, tint and interlayer colour. Used to cut glare and solar gain at a south-facing entrance, or simply to hide the dirt line that collects on any horizontal surface.
- Edge quality. Exposed edges are visible from underneath and from the sides. Polished edges are the norm; see glass edge finishes and fabrication.
Drainage, fall and maintenance
Every canopy has a fall, even the ones that look flat, and the fall has to go somewhere deliberate. Free drip over the front edge is simple and cheap but drops water exactly where people stand and, in freeze-thaw climates, produces ice at the threshold. A gutter at the low edge or a fall to one side removes that problem at the cost of a visible channel and something that must be cleared periodically. Falling back toward the wall is possible but puts the water at the junction that is hardest to keep watertight, so it is used sparingly and only with a properly detailed flashing.
Maintenance is worth stating plainly. Horizontal glass collects dust, pollen, mineral deposits and leaf debris, and it is looked through from below, so it shows every mark. Access for cleaning should be considered when the projection and height are set — a canopy that can only be reached from a lift will simply be cleaned less often.

We do not carry out structural engineering, we do not issue load calculations or stamped drawings, and we do not determine what a building department will require of your project. Those sit with your engineer and design team. On a canopy that boundary matters more than on any other assembly we supply, because it is an overhead element: the support structure has to be confirmed by the project's engineer, and we plan around that confirmation rather than around an assumption.

Common questions
- What glass is used in an overhead canopy?
- Overhead and sloped glazing is normally laminated, and frequently heat-treated as well, because the interlayer holds fragments together if a lite is broken rather than releasing them onto the area below. That is the single most important specification decision on a canopy and it is not the place to value-engineer. Thickness and interlayer type follow from the span, the support spacing and the loads the engineer of record assigns to the project.
- How is a canopy supported?
- Three families of detail cover most projects: standoff or point-fixed glass bolted back to the facade, cantilevered glass carried by an edge beam or fascia bracket, and glass infill into an aluminum or steel frame supported by rods or posts. Which one suits a project is decided by projection, the wall construction behind it and how visible you want the hardware to be.
- Do you handle the structural design?
- No. Gloria Glass specifies the glass assembly, coordinates the aluminum or hardware package and arranges professional installation. The structural adequacy of the supporting wall, beam or steel, and any engineering, permitting or code review the jurisdiction requires, are handled by the project's engineer and design team. We tell you early what the assembly will demand of the structure so that review happens before fabrication, not after.
- Where does the water go?
- A canopy is a roof, and it is judged on where it puts water. A flat-looking canopy still needs fall, and it needs a decided drainage strategy: free drip edge, a gutter at the low edge, a scupper, or a fall to one side away from the door. Free drainage over an entrance path is fine in some climates and a nuisance in freeze-thaw conditions, so the strategy is worth settling at design stage rather than on site.
- Are wind screens the same thing?
- Structurally they are closer to a guard than to a roof: vertical or near-vertical glass panels used to shelter a terrace, patio seating area, balcony corner or entrance recess from prevailing wind. They use similar point-fixed or channel-set details, but the loads are horizontal, and the base fixing and the substrate under it govern the design.
- Can a canopy be added to an existing building?
- Often, but the substrate decides. Solid masonry, concrete and structural steel accept canopy brackets readily. Brick veneer, EIFS, thin-set stone and unbacked stud walls generally do not carry a cantilevered load without added backing or a transfer detail.
