This project is one Gloria Glass LLC can describe from its own records: a laminated-glass interior partition, complete with a glass door and a transom above it, fabricated and installed for a medical-spa commercial interior in Brooklyn, New York. The account below covers the work we performed and the reasoning behind the assembly. We do not publish the client's name, the address, the contract value, the schedule or the panel dimensions.

The brief

Medical-spa interiors have a particular tension in their programme. Treatment and consultation areas need genuine separation from circulation and reception: a client on a treatment table should not be visible from the corridor, and conversations should not carry across the suite. At the same time the space is a hospitality environment as much as a clinical one, and the standard clinical answer — a stud wall with a solid door — makes interior rooms dark, tight and unwelcoming.

The interior was designed around a glazed separation instead: a glass partition running the width of the opening, a glass door within it, and a transom above the door so that the assembly reaches the ceiling line without oversizing the door leaf. The result keeps borrowed light moving through the plan while still enclosing the room.

Why laminated glass was used

The partition was built with laminated glass. In a laminate, two lites are permanently bonded to a polymer interlayer, so if the glass is broken the fragments remain adhered to the interlayer instead of clearing the opening. In an interior where clients are undressed, reclined and sometimes sedated by topical products, an assembly that stays in place after an impact is a materially different proposition from one that dices and drops out.

The interlayer also contributes damping, which helps a glazed wall handle speech privacy better than an equivalent monolithic panel would. We are careful with that point: damping improves the situation, it does not deliver a rated acoustic assembly, and no acoustic rating was tested or claimed for this partition. Assembly: partition, door and transom

Three elements had to work as one piece. The fixed partition panels define the plane of the wall and set the joint rhythm. The door sits within that plane, and its leaf weight — laminated glass is heavier than monolithic glass of similar appearance — determined the hardware and how the head had to be supported. The transom closes the gap between the door head and the ceiling, which is what allows a normal-height door leaf to be used in a room with a high ceiling rather than fabricating an unwieldy full-height leaf.

Framing was detailed to receive the glass at head, jambs and base, and to give the door and transom a continuous, deliberate line rather than a collection of separate pieces. Hardware preparation — door fittings, pull and lock positions — was fixed on the shop drawings, because laminated panels are fabricated to final size with cut-outs already made and cannot be modified once produced.

Measurement, fabrication and delivery

The opening was measured on site rather than taken from the drawings, since finished conditions in a fit-out rarely match the design set exactly. Those measurements drove the shop drawings covering panel sizes, joint positions, framing profiles, door swing and hardware locations, which were approved before any glass was ordered.

Fabrication covered cutting, edgework, lamination and hardware preparation, all completed in the shop. Delivery into an occupied Brooklyn commercial building is its own exercise: laminated panels are heavy, access routes through a fit-out are narrow, and finished surfaces along the route have to be protected. Panel breakdown and handling were planned around that access rather than around what would have been simplest to fabricate.

Installation

Installation followed our standard sequence: set and align the framing, place and shim the fixed panels, install the transom, hang and adjust the door, then seal the perimeter and clean the glass. Door adjustment is where a glazed partition is made or lost — alignment, swing and the reveal around the leaf are what the client sees every day — so it is the slowest part of the process by design.
