Commercial glass door types and hardware: choosing what fits the entrance
A storefront or office entrance is judged on how it looks for about a week and on how it operates for years afterward. Door type and hardware decide almost all of that second part. This guide walks through the common commercial glass door options, the hardware decisions attached to each, and the clearance and maintenance questions worth settling before anything is fabricated.

The main door types and what each trades off
Full-glass swing doors, sometimes called frameless or all-glass doors, are tempered glass panels with patch or clamp fittings at the top and bottom rather than a continuous frame. They give the cleanest sightline and read as an extension of an adjacent glass storefront or partition, but every hinge, lock and closer point has to be planned before the glass is tempered, since holes and notches cannot be added afterward.
Framed aluminum entrance doors set the glass inside a metal stile-and-rail frame. They cost less to replace a single unit, tolerate a wider range of hardware options, and generally seal and insulate better at the perimeter. The tradeoff is a heavier visual line and a narrower glass vision area for the same opening.
Sliding and barn-style glass doors save the floor area a swing would need and work well where a doorway sits close to a circulation path. They are usually the weaker acoustic and air-seal performer of the group, and the track and header condition above the opening needs to accept the hardware.
Pivot doors hang on a top and bottom pivot point rather than side hinges, which lets a single panel be wider and heavier than a hinged door of the same size could comfortably be. They make a strong entrance statement but need a structurally sound floor and header condition to carry the pivot loads, and the swing arc needs more clear floor space than a hinged door of similar width.

Closers, pulls and locks
A door closer controls how a door returns to its resting position, and the choice between overhead, floor-mounted or concealed closers depends on the door type and the frame condition below the opening. Floor closers suit frameless glass doors well because they keep hardware out of the sightline, but they need a pit or cavity in the finished floor that has to be coordinated before flooring goes down.
Pulls and push bars are largely an aesthetic and ergonomic choice, but their position sets the hole layout on a tempered panel, so this is one of the earliest decisions that locks in fabrication. Locks range from a simple deadbolt to electrified hardware tied into an access control system; electrified options add wiring runs that need a path through the frame or floor, which is far easier to plan for than to retrofit.
Where an entrance is required to support panic or fire-exit hardware, that requirement drives the door and hardware selection rather than following it, and should be confirmed against the applicable code before a door type is chosen.
Thresholds and clearances
Thresholds manage the transition between interior and exterior floor finishes, control water and air infiltration, and often carry part of the door's weather seal. Threshold height, the width of a clear opening, door force and the level landing area on each side of a door are all areas with accessibility requirements that vary by jurisdiction and building type — confirm the specific figures against the applicable code for the project rather than assuming a standard from another building carries over.
It is worth measuring the existing threshold and landing conditions early in a replacement project, since correcting a non-compliant threshold can involve floor work well beyond the door opening itself.
Maintenance over time
Glass doors see more daily cycles than almost any other glazed element in a building, and hardware wear shows up as the first sign of trouble: a closer that slams or fails to latch, a pivot that develops play, a lock that sticks. Periodic checks of closer adjustment, hinge and pivot fastenings, and seal condition catch most issues while they are still simple adjustments rather than hardware replacements.

- Door type selected against traffic pattern, available floor space and desired sightline.
- Closer type chosen and floor or header condition confirmed to accept it.
- Pull, push bar and lock positions finalized before any hardware cut-outs are ordered.
- Access control or electrified hardware wiring path planned, if applicable.
- Panic or fire-exit hardware requirements confirmed against the applicable code.
- Threshold height and landing clearances checked against the applicable code.
- Maintenance access agreed for closer adjustment and seal replacement.
